"Death Stare" Beijing Time, March 2013, Kunming

One day nearly ten years ago, when I was preparing for an exhibition at an art museum in Beijing, my third sister called and said, "Your mother is dying.".

The mother was diagnosed by the hospital for only 20 days at that time

I remember that in the corridor of the hospital, the third sister told the sad news. I, who never shed tears, burst out like a fountain that day.

From that day on, I became a nurse, nanny, and escort... There was no formal art of doing any more. Every day, I pushed my bike to the vegetable market to buy vegetables, cooked for her, and talked with her for hospice comfort. Every day, I talked with her for three hours of hospice comfort. I kept listening to her talk about her life's difficulties, and constantly helped her do spiritual guidance. Time passed quickly and miracles were happening

The following hand-painted records are basically the time when she died in the hospital or rested at home, and quickly recorded when she was unprepared. It is not a formal work, but a simple record of her last days with her mother. I'm afraid I will never see her again.

The first week of October 2019, in Yunnan, I learned the Chinese proverb: 'If there is dark, there is light. If there is light, there are shadows.’ Two months in Bajiezhen have brought me much light upon which to reflect. With Willy Wonkaian adventures alongside a motley Tom Sawyer crew, I have had the honor of playing with children, eating fresh bao in the mornings and bing on market days, watching the clouds, and cleaning the toilets.
